Bali, located in Denpasar, Indonesia, 1300KM southeast of Jakarta and 423KM from Surabaya (Surabaya). The full name of the airport is Ngurah Rai-Bali International Airport. With its beautiful beach scenery, Bali is one of famous leisure resorts for Europe, tourism industry is very developed, air transportation is the main way for tourists to enter and exit the island.

Chinese tourists are now also flocking to Bali. In 2019, China has direct flights to Bali, among major cities such as Beijing (Eastern Airlines, daily wide-body aircraft A330, MU), Shanghai (Eastern Airlines, daily wide-body aircraft A330 MU, and Garuda Indonesia GA, 3 wide-body flights per week), Guangzhou (China Southern Airlines CZ, two B737 narrow-body flights a day), Xiamen (Xiamen Airlines MF, A320 narrow-body flights a day), etc. There are more other airlines include Air Asia (AK/D7), Lion Air (JT), China Airlines (CI), Korean Air (KE), etc. The economic activities on the island are not very developed, so all air cargo is carried through passenger aircraft while not full cargo plane.

According to cargo volume, air cargo price changes and space, customer intentions, etc., we have carried by most of above airlines to Bali, and so we know a little about each airline. In particular of Shanghai PuDong Airport, has direct wide-body passenger planes every day, high frequency, can receive goods loaded in pallet, large volume over 1,000Kg, don’t worry fewer flights, unable to receive pallet loading and large volume, usually few delay, 5 hours direct arrival. It is said that DHL express also outsources this commercial flight to carry express cargo.

Bali is located in a volcanic crater, there are volcanic eruptions from time to time. The most serious one was in November 2017. The volcanic ash caused low visibility in the Bali area and the airport was closed for a few days without a reopening schedule. At that time, one shipment of nearly 1,000Kg has completed customs declaration and release, air pallet assembly and all other export procedures at Shanghai Airport, just waiting to take off. The sudden volcano disrupted all arrangements. Due to urgent request, customer requested to change to fly to Surabaya Airport. Then, we changed shipping space, disassemble air pallet, return from customs, customs inspection, re-export declaration, assemble again. All are operated in an orderly manner to help customers to receive the goods as soon as possible.

At the beginning of year 2020, COVID-19 broke out. In order to prevent and control the epidemic, each country adopted measures to restrict entry of foreign tourists. The international civil aviation passenger industry has been hit hard, and the number of flights has been greatly reduced or cancelled directly, many aircraft have parked on the apron. Due to the drastic reduction in the supply of air transportation capacity and the explosion in demand for epidemic prevention materials, the price of air cargo sent to Bali in first half of 2020 has soared. In the peak period, it’s 6 times that of 2019, and hard to find space at the same time. The services of airlines and Courier Company were shocked.

In mid-March 2020, one customer decided to arrange air freight for urgently needed goods. We hurriedly booked the space and picked up the goods from the factory to try to ship out early. When we were preparing for the next step, we suddenly received the airline's notice that the second flight would have to be temporarily cancelled due to the epidemic. As before, we quickly reported the cancellation of the flight to the customer, many thanks customer understanding that decided to cancel. Later, we chatted with the customer and learned that he arranged DHL express delivery. Due to objective force majeure, DHL did not deliver the goods to the customer until 1 month later... This situation is still vivid. Especially for some freight forwarders, such experience is more profound. After the cargo takes off and arrives at the foreign transit airport (such as Dubai, Doha, Istanbul), the connected journey is suddenly cancelled and cannot ship out, and then has to be returned from overseas to origin, customs return, etc...

Affected by sharp increase freight rates, many customers in Bali are unbearable. Those that do not urgently need switch to sea shipping and select smaller batches in urgent and change to express delivery. The original supply chain and costs have been greatly affected. After July and August 2020, the situation is slightly eased, but compared to year 2019, the price is still very high. Customers are more cautious about whether it is worth arranging air freight. At the same time, there is no direct flight, about 3 days transit time dragged down the supply chain.

Year 2020 will pass in more than a month. Looking forward to be normal, every link in the supply chain such as factories, buyers, traders, airlines and air freight forwarders will be fine.
